In 1940s, Teo Thye Chor alongside with his younger brother, Teo Thye Hong migrating from Fujian, China, to Singapore in search of something more than they had back home. Right after the Second World War, the brother then founded Tong Eng Brothers, a firm that dealt with the trade of electrolytic tin plates which were used to produce cans and bottle caps. As the post-war rebuilding occured in the 1950s, the brothers soon realized the growing potential in demand for accommodations and property development.With a leap of Faith, they decided to venture and penetrate into this industry. One of the turning point was that Thye Chor sighted the possible upside potential in the Paya Lebar district and made their first land purchased. Tong Eng then went on to develop the piece of land as the first industrial estate in that locality.
The Tong Eng Brothers continued to acquired land in the various part of Singapore, especially in region like Upper Serangoon Road, Changi Area, Yio Chu Kang and Pasir Panjang area. All this total up to around 40 hectares of land for future development. The developer developed the lands into residential housing for the Britsh forces staying in Singapore during the early day. As Tong Eng Brother is an established company in the Tin business, they have dealing with MNC such as Mobil, Esso and Shell. Land are sold to these major oil companies for the usage of petrol stations which result in roads constructed and improve infrastructure. In 1968, Teo Tong Wah and the uncle took over the business as the next generation of Tong Eng Brothers. The new direction include developing the company’s land bank.
For many years, the company continued to venture and developed properties in various sectors comprising of landed housing, condominiums, apartments, offices and retail malls. Some of these projects are Green Meadows, Trendale Tower,Greenbank Park, Stratton Park, Belgravia Park, Serenade Garden, Eminent Plaza, Kew Cottages, Treasure Place, Serangoon Plaza and Poshgrove East, to name a few.
At Present, under the helm of Group Managing Director Teo Tong Lim, the family business has successfully passed down into its third generation. The group aims to inspire, and with on-going projects such as the Belgravia Green and Belgravia Villas, it is a perfect assurance and track records that indicate the company real deal in providing quality housing to the citizens of Singapore.
