Belgravia Green Developer
In the 1940s, Teo Thye Chor together with Teo Thye Hong, his younger brother, migrated from the Chinese city of Fujian to Singapore in a quest for something more valuable than they possessed back home. Immediately after World War 2, the brother established Tong Eng Brothers, a company that specializes in trading electrolytic tin plates, which is a based raw material use to manufactured bottle caps and cans. During the post-war rebuilding period of the 1950s, the brothers quickly discovered the increasing possibilities as a result of high demand for homes and accommodations. With a step of Faith, they took a decision to invest in this sector and make their way into the property industry. One of the life-changing moment was that Thye Chor noticed the potential advantages inherent in the Paya Lebar area and purchased their first ever land in the district. Tong Eng consequently proceeded to develop the property as the first ever industrial estate in that district.
The Brothers went on to purchased land in different districts of Singapore, particularly in places like Changi Area, Upper Serangoon Road, Pasir Panjang, Yio Chu Kang area. All these individual units add up to about 40 hectares of prime land for future use. During its earlier days, the developer developed these lands into residential units for the British forces living in Singapore at the time. And because the Tong Eng Brother is a household name in the Tin industry, they have business transactions with Multinational Corporations like Shell, Mobil, and Esso. These big oil companies purchased lands they use to build petrol stations and these equally lead to the construction of roads and provision of better infrastructures by these companies. The leadership of the company was handed over to Teo Tong Wah and his Uncle in 1968, this change of leadership heralds the next generation of Tong Eng Brothers management. The leadership change also brings about a change in the company’s focus and the new path the company took was to consolidate and develop its many landed properties.
For several years, the company kept on undertaking and developing properties in different sectors consisting of condominiums, landed housing, apartments, office buildings and retail stores. Some of these developments are : Trendale Tower, Green Meadows, Greenbank Park, Belgravia Park, Stratton Park, Eminent Plaza, Serenade Garden, Treasure Place, Kew Cottages, Poshgrove East, and Serangoon Plaza among others.
